VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering at Ageing Well is a great way to make a difference in your community. We are always looking for new people to join the team, so take a look at the opportunities below or just contact us to find out about the most recent openings. Most roles will require a DBS (police check), which we can provide if you do not have a current one.

Silver Lunch Club, Goldsmith’s Community Centre (Catford/Downham)

The Silver Lunch Club is held every Thursday from 11:00-2:00 at the Goldsmith’s Community Centre. It is open to any older person who would like a bit of fun, some companionship, and a nourishing meal. We keep the meals simple so that they can be prepared on-site in 2 hours. The guests are very friendly and enjoy interacting with staff and volunteers.

Volunteers required:

  • Cooks:

    • Task: Prepare a simple meal (main, vegetable/salad, dessert) for 15 people. Menu and shopping will be pre-organised (but feel free to make suggestions!). You will have 2 hours to prepare the meal in a fully-equipped kitchen.

    • Day and time: Thursdays, 11:00-1:00pm

    • Requirements: Level 2 food hygiene certificate (we can arrange for a training session if you do not already have this)

    • What you will get out of this opportunity: Catering experience, Level 2 food hygiene training (if needed), camaraderie with a friendly team

  • Kitchen/serving assistants:

    • Tasks: Assist the cook in meal prep; lay the table; prepare hot drinks for the guests; help with washing up.

    • Day and time: Thursdays, 11:00-1:00pm or 12:00-2:00pm

    • Requirements: DBS check

    • What you will get out of this opportunity: Catering experience, camaraderie with a friendly team

  • Session support volunteers, Grove Centre (Sydenham)

We are looking for volunteers to support our weekly sessions held in the Grove Centre, Sydenham. Ideally, volunteers would do one 2-hour session per week for at least 2 months.

  • Tasks: Interacting with a lovely and fun group of older people - making cups of tea, helping out with art projects, setting up games, etc. It is a very friendly environment! The only thing we would require is a DBS check - if you don’t have a recent one, we can help you with that.

  • Session times (choose one):

  • Tuesday 1:00-3:00 - Arts and Games group

  • Wednesday 10:00-12:00 - Bingo & Gentle exercise

Online Promotion & Social Media

Ageing Well spends a lot of time out in the community, running valuable programming for older, isolated people in Lewisham. What it doesn’t have much time to do is promote itself! We are looking for someone to help us get our message and news out more efficiently, via email newsletters, Twitter, Facebook and via our website. Setting up procedures might take a few hours to begin with, but after that one or two hours per week would really help us keep up. This can be done mostly remotely or in our Catford office, as is convenient, and as and when you have time.

Our aims are to increase our audience with funders, potential partners, as well as new members and referees.

  • Tasks: Setting up procedure for online promotion, via e-newsletter, social media and the website. Making updates via these procedures on a weekly basis.

  • Day and time: Your choice

  • Qualifications/skills required: Social media promotion & website skills

  • What you will get out of this opportunity: Online promotional experience; helping older people find valuable local services to reduce their social isolation

Trustees

Ageing Well in Lewisham (a project of Lewisham Churches Care) aims to help older people in Lewisham lead fuller and happier lives, by offering programming designed to promote mental and physical health, stimulate creativity, and reduce social isolation.

We are currently recruiting Trustees to join the management team to help us deliver our objectives efficiently and ensure the strength and robustness of the organisation.

Charity experience preferred but not necessary. Especially welcome are specific skills in fundraising, charity management, working with older people, and/or networking in the community.
